Cultural Olympiad

Tourism South East are supporting the Cultural Olympiad that begins this year and we are encouraging our members to get involved.

Read the brief outline below or download a detailed description of the Cultural Olympiad and the opportunities available here

The Cultural Olympiad will provide an opportunity to try something new, to encourage community involvement, to think differently about the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, and to showcase Britain’s creativity to the rest of the world.  It launches this year over the weekend of September 26 - 28.  The launch weekend carries the themes of Light Up and Open Up; it is a chance for the public to visit new places, see things which they normally can't (such as behind the scenes of a theatre or the workings of a hotel kitchen) or to see their favourite landscapes or buildings in a new way through creative light.  It's a chance for you to light up or open up your venue: everyone taking part will be included on the London 2012 website.

Any not-for-profit organisation can put a project forward for inclusion in the Cultural Olympiad; successful projects will carry the Inspire mark.  “The London 2012 Culture team also has a motto of 'like never before' this means that they are looking for new, innovative and exciting projects that are both aspirational and inspirational.  Anyone taking part will, like our amazing Olympians and Paralympians, have to strive for personal best.”

The Inspire mark will form a key part of the Games lasting legacy and will be awarded to innovative, non-commercial projects and events inspired by the Games across sport, culture, education, environment and volunteering. Each cultural organisations’ project will be evaluated and assessed by the Regional Creative Programmers, and can take place anytime between 25 August 2008 and 9 September 2012.
